Who We Serve: Empowering Families with Medically Fragile Children to Experience the Outdoors

At The Gwen Does Stuff Project, we believe every child deserves the chance to experience the simple joys of being outside—feeling the breeze on a mountaintop, dipping their toes in a pool, or laughing with their siblings at the park. For many families of medically fragile children, these moments are difficult to come by. The world isn’t always built with accessibility in mind, and specialized equipment can be prohibitively expensive. That’s where we step in.

We serve families of children who live with complex medical conditions, physical disabilities, or developmental delays that require extra support to safely participate in outdoor or recreational activities. These children often rely on oxygen, feeding tubes, wheelchairs, or other medical devices. And while their strength, curiosity, and sense of wonder are as vibrant as any child’s, the barriers they face can leave them sidelined from the kinds of outings most families take for granted.

We also support the people who love and care for these children—the parents, caregivers, and siblings who long for shared family experiences but often find themselves isolated by logistical and financial challenges. When a playground isn’t wheelchair accessible or a nature trail is too rough for a medical stroller, entire families miss out. That’s why we focus on solutions that benefit the whole family—because connection, laughter, and adventure should be for everyone.

Through financial grants and hands-on support, we help families access adaptive equipment like off-road strollers, inclusive swings, ramps, and pool lifts. These aren’t just tools—they’re keys to freedom. A custom beach wheelchair lets a child feel the ocean for the first time. A ramp makes it possible to reach a scenic overlook. A pool lift turns a summer day into a celebration. These experiences foster not only joy but also healing, confidence, and togetherness.

The need is significant. Nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has a special health care need, and studies show that these families face reduced access to recreational activities. Equipment costs can easily exceed thousands of dollars, leaving many with few options. That’s why our mission is focused, local, and deeply personal. Inspired by Gwen’s own journey—her strength, her love of nature, and her unforgettable adventures—we are committed to giving other families what Gwen was given: the chance to explore the outdoors with dignity, freedom, and joy.

At The Gwen Does Stuff Project, we don’t provide one-time experiences. We provide opportunities that last—memories that are made again and again. We walk alongside families, not just as supporters, but as fellow adventurers. We serve them with empathy, respect, and the belief that the outdoors belongs to everyone.

Because every child deserves to do stuff. Every family deserves adventure. And with the right support, they will.
