Every child deserves the chance to explore the world with wonder, to feel the sun on their face, and to create memories in the great outdoors. But for families of medically fragile children, these simple joys are often out of reach. Medical equipment, financial limitations, and physical barriers can make even a short family outing seem impossible. That’s where The Gwen Does Stuff Project comes in.
Our mission is rooted in the belief that outdoor adventures should be accessible to all. Inspired by Gwen—a medically fragile child who, thanks to community support and specialized equipment, was able to hike trails, splash in pools, and explore the world around her—we are working to ensure other families can do the same. Through our grant program, we help families acquire adaptive strollers, off-road wheelchairs, inclusive swings, pool lifts, and other specialized gear. More than just equipment, we provide guidance, resources, and support to help families plan safe and joyful outdoor experiences tailored to their child’s needs.
Our vision is bold and beautiful: a world where every medically fragile child and their family can access the outdoors, experience nature’s healing power, and create unforgettable memories—regardless of mobility, health concerns, or income. We don’t offer just one-time trips or wish experiences; we aim to enable a lifestyle of adventure. The gear we fund becomes a part of the family’s everyday life, empowering them to return to parks, trails, and pools over and over again.
Why is this needed? Because far too many families are left behind. According to national data, 15–20% of U.S. children have special healthcare needs, and many of their families report limited access to recreational activities. Adaptive gear is expensive—off-road strollers alone can cost thousands. The result is isolation, missed moments, and emotional strain on the whole family. Gwen’s story is proof of what’s possible with the right support—and we want to extend that possibility to others.
The Gwen Does Stuff Project is 100% volunteer-run, with every dollar going directly to local families. We raise funds through community events, individual donations, and partnerships with local businesses and adaptive equipment providers. Our work is personal, local, and deeply rooted in lived experience. We understand what these families face—because we’ve lived it.
In our first year, we aim to help at least five families with essential gear and support. As we grow, so will our impact. We’ll track our success not just through numbers, but through the stories, smiles, and shared adventures we help create.
At The Gwen Does Stuff Project, we believe in a life lived outside, in motion, together. And with your support, we’re making that belief a reality for families who need it most.
